Access to sex offender information in New York is provided to the public as the result of the Jacob Wetterling Registration Act, which was passed by the United States Congress and Megan's Law, which requires states to release relevant information about registered offenders to protect the public. General Info about Registered Offenders and Sex Offender Registration


SORA was enacted to assist local law enforcement agencies to protect communities by: 1) requiring offenders to register with the State; and, 2) providing information to the public about certain offenders living in their communities. SORA took effect on January 21, 1996.

The Information Line can be used by the public to determine whether an individual is a convicted sex offender who is required to register. For a fee of $0.50 you can inquire about up to five individuals by calling at 1-900-288-3838.
