First, GOD isn't coming down from 'Heaven" to save us innocents from rapists, molesters and murderers...IF HE was, this Earth would be a truly wonderful place to live AND raise children. Given the global population , comparing it to the number of offenders...they are a relatively small group....IF any of you REALLY [AND I MEAN REALLLLLY] wanted to change the way offenders are prosecuted, you'd waste a lot less time posting your sniveling drivel and actually DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM! In reviewing the list of offender crimes, your poll overwhelmingly sites a 64% concern about having a child molester next door. While I certainly agree that this is the most heinous crime and unforgiveably crime in the list, I personally am more concerned about the rapist. This is a person who will go after someone whether or not the victim is able to defend themself or not. It shows a willingness to fantisize, then premeditatedly carry out an assault on a woman who could be my wife, daughter, or even another male. With my children, it is my responsiblity to keep them safe - mine and my wifes. I never let them out of my sight and they know they can come to me at any time with a concern about someone strange in the neighborhood. I am definitely more concerned about the person who will openly attack someone able to defend themself. An offender of this nature is more dangerous. 2003-04-24 (Anon) I am related to a pedofile and my family and I have been manipulated and harrassed and threatened by people who don't like pedofiles. I don't like him either but have the same name and lived in fear of retaliation. 2003-04-24 (Belinda) I was molested as a child by a family friend and my Father chose to protect this person from a goal sentence. I was told that he was only joking. I am now 28 years of age and have had psychosis and depression for many years. The effect was trust. I rejected all of my family and trusted no one. I am now married but am being educated on what is sex is and what rape is because I do not know the difference. I can not understand or cope with someone who loves me having sex with it confuses and angers me. My husband is angry because he feels that he did not do anything to deserve the childhood baggage. I am a psych nurse and have worked with people who have been convicted of murder of their own family members and don't hate them or understand them but knowing their histories scares me. When it comes down to it alot of people commit crimes and their victims are innocent and maybe there is something in their history that has given them justification (so they think) to commit these acts. I think that just because you have had something done to you does not give you the right to do the same thing. Most people could excuse themselves but when its the law and it broken and you hurt someone very badly then you need to punished and also face the victim and hear exactly what you have done. Just because they've done their time is no guarantee they've changed their ways. The books are full of repeat offenders for all crimes. Safety of our children is the number one priority. These people committed horrid crimes against defenseless victims, and those victims are going to spend the rest of their lives trying to recover from the psycological effects of what was done to them. So too bad if the released offender find it difficult to have friends. I have been in the pych ward 4 times and on a lot of meds. I have had 12 ect treatments. I thought I could forget about it and go about my life like nothing every happend however when I had kids of my own my panic attacks started really bad. I now have panic attacks, bi-polar, ptsd, and depression. It's horible and I'm trying to take care of my own kids but I am in constant fear of something happening to them. Something needs to change. It's been studied and maybe the facts aren't all in yet, but up till now, the recidivism rate for sexual predators is the highest. A good portion of the problem is that the intensive therapy that sexual predators need is not available. It's too expensive and the cost is somewhat prohibitive. But I'd like to state to the "predators were abused too" peanut gallery. Not all abused as children abuse as adults. That's a convenient excuse. As for false accusations, I'm sure it happens but I don't know of a predator out there that will say, "yah, I did it." They're going to deny it and cry foul. I think the people who exclaim, "kill them all," are a bit extreme. That's unnecessary. But as for being forced to register...let's put it as simply as possible. If anyone violates a child, they should lose that right to live as free citizens. An adult's first responsibility is to protect the child. He moulded her into being a victim through fear of him and what would happen to her if she ever told. He manipulated, dominated and controlled her through out the abuse and relied on this to ensure her silence. Her silence ensured he was again able to rape and sodomize his granddaughter, 12 years after the last attack on his daughter. 2 years ago, he pleaded guilty to 9 charges of rape on his daughter( 1 for every year of the attacks), 2 on his 7 year old granddaughter and 2 of indecent assault on his granddaughter. The courts took into account his plea of guilty, and the fact he had no previous record. He was sentenced to 8 years in prison. He will serve 3. The courts accounted for 1 rape per year of the attqacks, as the victims could not recall specfic dates of the said attacks. For a man who committed more than 500 rapes, I'd say he got away rather lightly. What was not taken into account in the court was the victims own testimonies, as there was no need, he'd pleaded guilty. The reason? He knew he would be rewarded with a lighter sentence. The courts here are not interested in a victims perspective, and the reason being is simple. The courts here in the United Kingdom have a limited budget in which to administer prison sentences. In fact the government actively discourages jail sentences. Tell me how, we, the public are supposed to protect our children and witnesses against the likes of him, on his release? Due to the fact "He had no previous record", he was treated as a first time offender. However, he's a first time convicted offender with more than 500 rapes under his belt. My younger sister was lucky enough to escape a situation of molestation about two weeks ago. A man dressed in women's clothes followed her into the laundamat at the apts. and touched himself with vaseline in front of her; she screamed as loud as she could and he ran away. The police were called and there had already been reports of the same man from others in the area. I can only pray that this man is found and receives what he deserves!!!! He spent 6 years in prison and is now out and off parole. My wife informed me that she and this person are talking about dating if not already doing so. I know who and what he is,so does she. But she doesn't know that I do. We have 3 young daughters that go there to visit her on weekends. I am very worried about this and what could happen. Right now there are 2 other mothers and 2 other children living there with my wife. The rapist lives next door and comes to visit daily and is welcomed. I would like to know what they were convicted of thow was it a baby? (a young child who did not choose the situation) or a easy teen who got caught by there parents? I was molested as a young child he was convicted and releast 6 years later. An yes he did it all over again with more baby's. The "Child molesters" I met in prison and in my court ordered therapy are did NOT actually molest a child. They may have looked at child porn on the internet or something but they did NOT, repeat NOT, actually touch a child. AND, the child molesters you really need to worry about are the ones that have NOT been caught. And as for rape, I person in my counselling is a rapeist. He was 17 and the girl was 15 when her daddy caught them "doing it". Unfortunately for him, her dad was a cop who called in enough favors to get him prosecuted and convicted of RAPE3. If your neighbor wants your kids to play a game, then you should tag along. The long and short of it is: Know where your kids are and who they are with. Make people earn your trust. Unfortunately bad things can and will happen. It is so important to allow for free communication. Ask questions. Educate your kids. Educate yourself. Kids that are being molested are forced to "promise" to never tell. They can also be told that if they tell, "I'll hurt your family."
