i think that this thread should only be for victims and their families or friends of a victim.


The Victims and Survivors Corner forum should be thought of as the appropriate place for people to discuss victim and survivor issues, more than as the place for victims and survivors to discuss all issues. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it well enough for the difference to be clear. Think of the forums as help groups. A Battered Wives group is a place where battered wives go to get support and discuss relevant issues. It wouldn't be appropriate or a good use of time for a battered wife to go to such a group and discuss time management problems or how to improve her credit score. There are other groups and forums for such issues. But a new boyfriend of a battered wife may want to participate in the group and both he and the battered wives may benefit from it. But the presence of a male in of itself may be triggering or offensive to some of the members. So the group is really about a topic, not a clear-cut segment of people, and one of the tricky parts is deciding who can participate, how their presence will affect others and how to notify members of a possible offensive/triggering presence.

In the case of the Victims and Survivors Corner, I want to allow victims and their loved ones to participate, so long as they adhere to the forum guidelines and are constructive. Constructive is key. I also want victim advocates who aren't victims, survivors or relatives of such to post, but again, so long as they adhere to the forum guidelines and are constructive. But I also want people that can provide support and advice, but don't fit in one of the groups above to post. In general that's not a problem, but if they are an offender, pedophile or someone whose views are offensive to the groups above in general, it can cause tension. So that is what needs to be addressed.
