I'd post this elsewhere but I can't start a thread in the Site section. The new "header" on top with the navigation links is terrible imo. Whats with the "white" overlay on some of it. It seems so pasted together now I really don't like it.

Is it an experiment or what?

You should have been able to start a thread in Site Goals and Ideas (where I moved this thread to). If not, there's a problem I need to look into.

I decided to rearrange the menu because the site receives 10-30 emails per week asking how to find their state/local sex offender registry, Megan's Law details, etc. I suspect that for each email the site gets, there are several dozen who have the same questions, but don't contact the site.

I moved the links to the most visited site section to the top row and decided to do something to make the links stand out in order to see if it will have an effect on the number of messages sent to the site. I also tried bolding the link text in addition to and instead of the background shading.

Suggestions and criticism are welcome. I'm probably going to have to balance asthetics with desired results, though I'm just testing right now.

well it was a shock to see it at first, but it's grown on me now.

course you should have seen the first minute or so of my reaction when the login link wasn't where I expected it to be. the phrase "OH NO, I've been Banned" came to mind for a fleeting moment. ;-)

How about justifying?

Maybe justifying it to the center or something? It just looks so discombubulated!!!!! Having the logout on the left like that just doesn't flow together nicely.

There is not NEW TOPIC button for me like there is in the other forums.

Ditto. I haven't been able to figure out how to start a thread here. I figured Steve didn't want us to because it would only add to his already looooong list of things to do:-))

Users can now create threads here

As mentioned in a post I just made in the Site Announcements forum, users can now create new threads in this forum. I was under the mistaken impression that I had already made that change since several threads have been created here by users, but after investigating I discovered that there was a bug that allowed new threads to be created here under some circumstances.

Silverthorne, can you send me a screenshot via email? I tested in Firefox and IE on several computers and the Login (or Logout) and About Us links were always on the far right of the 2nd row of the menu.

Why worry about where the logout is? All you have to do is type a long post and you get kicked out automatically:-))

Actually emphasis is a very important principle of design. And function should always come before beauty. I do not see anything wrong with the highlighted links. In fact I think it lends an industrial element to the design of the page staying with the minimalist feel of the page. Nice and clean.
