I'm testing an internal search engine that's an externally hosted service provided by the Google search engine. The site hasn't had a search engine on it for some time.
Previously, I had a search engine installed on the server itself, using software called mnoGoSearch (known as udmsearch when I first started using it). I installed a newer version of mnoGoSearch a few months ago, but testing revealed that it used too many server resources to be feasible based on expected usage. I may consider it again later, but I'd either have to limit searches per visitor, simultaneous searches or control its usage in some way. For the time being, I've decided that a solution that's not hosted on the server may be preferable.
Please try the current internal search engine run by Google and share your thoughts with me. I will probably add a link to it (or possibly a search box directly) in the top menu if it appears to work well.

steve, it seems to work well, I think putting it in the header would definately draw a better crowd to using it. Also, I don't know if it's possible but when you first go to the search engine, it automatically checks the bubble for a "web" search rather than the "internal" search. Can that be reset so it automatically fills the bubble for an "internal" search?

rabbitreborn, thanks for the feedback. After it's gone through more of a trial run I'll probably add it to the top of every page. From a technical standpoint, defaulting to an internal search is no problem and is what I'd prefer, but surprisingly, Google's program policies seem to indicate that may not be permitted, at least implicitly. I am going to contact them for clarification.

It seems to work OK. I entered my own name and found about 100 pages of stuff (LOL). Amusingly the first "Silverthorne" entry wasn't about me but rather the Silverthorne, Colorado PD. And that was using the sexcriminals button rather then the web button.

I find this search engine limited. A lot of times I can't find what I am looking for on this site even though I know it is there. I have tried a number of search terms. Usually it doesn't find it.
