Per the Forum Guidelines:
"Guideline 2
Foul language is not be permitted. This includes masking profanity with special characters and misspelling foul language."
Over the last month, I have warned 6 posters privately about their use of profanity, removing the profanity and replacing it with more acceptable wording. I've also rejected a few posts outright over this period due to use of profanity. There have also no doubt been posts with profanity which I have not caught.
For those who don't know, not every post is read word for word before being posted. Some posts are skimmed, some are never even read by me or are read days after being posted. Due to my busy schedule (a job, running a separate business and pursuing two graduate degrees for starters), combined with the increasing volume of posts to the forums and a desire not to hold up conversations due to delays in moderation, long-time users with a history of abiding by the rules bypass normal pre-moderation and other users' posts are sometimes skimmed instead of read word by word. On top of that, I am human - I make mistakes, I plan to do a particular task related to moderation and forget or run out of time or let some things slide because I'm tired, out of time, consider them grey areas or think that there's value in allowing the post to appear unedited and unblocked, even in light of a rule violation.
Back to the issue of profanity. Profanity is not permitted. Though I quoted the rule earlier in the post, here it is again.
"Guideline 2
Foul language is not be permitted. This includes masking profanity with special characters and misspelling foul language."
Since it might not be clear, I'll explain in more detail. And to do so, I'm going to use some profanity for example purposes. If you are offended by profanity, do not scroll down...but also, don't use it on these forums. :-)

Asshole
Asshole is foul language. Asshole is profanity. Foul language is not permitted on the forums. Profanity is not permitted on the forums. Therefore, the word Asshole can not be used in a post on the forums.
A**hole
A**hole is foul language. A**hole is profanity. The use of * or any other letter, number or character in a profanity does not make it any less of a profanity. This is what is prohibited in the rule where it says "masking profanity with special characters".
Azzhol is also foul language. It's misspelled, but it's still profanity. It's prohibited.
Jerk is not profanity. It's an acceptable substitute for Asshole. So is any other word or phrase that's not profanity. Not profanity = OK. Profanity = NOT OK.
I hope I really didn't have to say this, but Asshole is not the only word I consider profanity. I'm not going to generate a comprehensive list. I'm not even going to create a list period. In my judgment, if it's profanity, it's profanity. I don't care whether it's in English, Spanish, Yiddish or a language I've never even heard of.
If for whatever reason you are unsure of whether a word would be considered profanity or foul language by me, er on the side of caution and don't use it. If you'd like, Private Message me in advance to ask. If you use profanity and either I see it or it's reported to me, I will either reject your post (before or after it's appeared on the forums as the case may be) or edit it. Either way it's extra work for me. Users who make me do a lot of extra work have the potential to irritate me and could be faced with being banned from the forums.
So, don't use profanity. If you see profanity, throw me a bone and Private Message me with either the 1. URL or 2. message ID number *and* the profanity in question (as written, character for character), especially if it's a 1,000 word rambling post like this one. And keep in mind what I said about having a busy schedule and being human. If I censor your profanity and Private Message you to tell you so (which I do almost without exception) and you see another post with profanity, don't jump down my throat. There's no conspiracy, I'm not out to get you and you're not special. I'm just a busy guy who's not perfect, can't moderate the forums the way I could if I was independently wealthy and had the time to sit in front of the PC monitoring the forum constantly...and I'm human.
Thanks for understanding (I hope) and respecting the rules (I hope) and being willing to help make these forums a better place by being my eyes and ears and helping me out (I hope).
