In Florida the citizens can call the toll free number on the sex offender registry and ask FDLE for the probation officer's phone number. In Florida, probation and parole is statewide so it wouldn't matter if you called a Miami PO for example to inquire about an offender in Orlando as an alternative to calling FDLE.
Other states such as California and Georgia do not have a state probation office. Unfortunately, they operate county by county which makes research more difficult. I suppose calling the local police department in the offender's home town would be a good start. If you don't mind the run-a-round from county to county you could contact probation or parole in your hometown and ask. I know the PO's name and number are entered into the NCIC when they register also. I assume any LE can access that info although it's sometimes a little behind the times. I hope this helps. It you are trying to contact a PO and having difficulty I'd be glad to assist......I work for state government and have experience with red tape, hoop jumping and run-a-rounds.(lol) Good luck.
