Can I hand out information about a registered sex offender? Can I hang up fliers? What am I entitled to do when the police will do nothing?

Written notice of a habitual sex offender or sexual predator is provided to the following persons within the specified geographic notification area (defined in administrative rule as the entire school district in which an offender resides): local law enforcement, all occupants of residences adjacent to the offender's place of residence; the executive director of the public children services agency; the superintendent of each board of education of a school district; the appointing or hiring officer of each nonpublic school; the director, head teacher, or elementary principal of each preschool program; the administrator of each child day care center; and, the president or other chief administrative officer of each institution of higher education.

Which of these was not done that compels you to believe the police aren't doing their job?

Contact your local authorities and speak with them. Then contact local sheriff's and see what they say. Each city, county and state have their own set of laws. You don't want to violate any laws.

But I caution you in going out doing public notificaion yourself. You never know what might be out there, and your personal safety could be at risk.

Go to your neighborhood watch. If your community does not have one, then see about starting one. A sex offender living in your neighborhood shouldn't be your only concern.

Information and education are your best tools.

I'd caution against posting flyers or planning protests until you are absolutely sure the parole officer can't scoop him up and haul him off to jail today. The police have nothing to do with managing his parole. You must contact them immediately. If it is determined that he is in fact in violation of his parole then they should arrest him immediately. If they can't arrest him then plan your protest. Bring it on! But, do not protest and scare him off without giving the parole officer a chance to investigate your claims and take immediate action. Chasing him off will accomplish nothing. Just my 2 cents.

I would suggest try doing something to occupy your time. Maybe a job or a hobby. Chances are he won't get your child, it will be a member of your clergy, your best friend's husband, your husband, or your neighbor. Make sure you post flyers for everyone.

May I suggest that before you post a rude comment in the victim's forum that you at least read their story? For crying out loud. This poor woman's step daughter is dating a predator and she's trying to see what her options are. If you are in favor of minors dating adults then go back to your room please. Thanks.

We all have those days, somedays it's hard just to get out of bed. . .Hey as to this child dating a molestor/offender or whatever. . .maybe I missed it, but last I checked, if he's on parole, every state has rule against who you can have contact with while on probation, what state is this-I can almost guarantee he is in violation of his parole? I'm just curious, I think it was probably mentioned, but I'm having one of those forgetful days.

posting around the neighborhood might be iffy, but maybe you could post his pic and a copy of his police report on your daughter's door, and anywhere else you think might be beneficial. it's your home.

if you have the means you could take your daughter to a victims group of her peers that will allow her to observe. i'm certain they might have some perspectives that she will listen to.

I think your idea is a good one, and actually most people do so, if IF it is legal in your area, if you live w/in city limits go to your local po, ask them, if you live out of city, go to your sherifs office, they will know.

you do not want to do so if it is illegal in your state/county, but yes I am all for it.

Your original post in this thread should not have been approved. For those who are curious, when reviewing pending posts, it''s easy for me and other moderators to overlook the forum the post was to, and given time constraints sometimes posts aren't analyzed as thoroughly as we'd like, especially if the post is by a user that hasn't had a history of needing his/her posts reviewed in detail. sboyles, I know you weren't apologizing to me specifically, but I accept your explanation. Please use better judgment in the future so you don't have to be asked not to post in this forum. Thanks.
