That is rather young. But then again, I believe there are known cases of 8 year-old boys raping 6 year-old girls.
As for the school issue, I was an exemplary student until 5th grade. I failed 5th miserably, and to this day I and my Mom have no idea why it happened. I recovered and not only repeated 5th but completed 6th in the same year, and entered 7th on schedule.
I'm certainly not discounting the fact that he may have been abused It is entirely possible, and the similarity between your childhood and Daniel's is remarkable.
