I was assaulted as a child by a man in a wheelchair sometime around 1985. We lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea to be more precise, about 1/2 mile from the DAV office. Not that that fact has any relevance. I remember him only as a white male. I never said a word. I worry that this man may have continued to hurt children, and I am carrying around a lot of guilt, because I know how it affected, and continues to affect, my life. I know this is a shot in the dark, as I have no other information. I am not out to punish anyone, I don't really know what I am out to do.

Sometimes it simply helps to talk about it. Do you have a support system or friend/family member that you could talk out your feelings with? Or you could call you local Sexual Assault Program's Crisis Line and talk to an advocate confidentially.

Cassandra,
Have you had any counseling or anything for this? If you like I can recommend a few "self-help" type books for you. Otherwise I'd recommend seeing someone. If he was in a wheelchair I assume it was non-invasive abuse (fondling or such)? Why didn't you talk about it then? Did he do this more then once?

Have you ever thought about whether you should have reported it to the police? I have a friend who was molested by her step father when she was young. As an adult she finally decided that she needed to track him down and report it for fear that he might be hurting someone else. She hired a PI and found him. When she called the police she was told that the limitations ran out and it was too late. She did some snooping around and found out that he was married with no kids. It seemed to comfort her in knowing he wasn't hurting another step child.
If you are interested in knowing if he's a convicted sex offender in Florida you can visit the FDLE website. We put all the photos on the site including phsycal descriptions. If you did a search in Broward County for example you could look at the descriptions and see if someone is listed as handicapped or in a wheelchair.

You can find links and information to the Florida site DP1 mentioned by clicking "Sex Offender Registry" from the menu above, then "Florida" from the listing in the middle of the page that loads.
