Convicted molester arrested in Mexico, faces extradition

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A former bail bondsman who was convicted of sexually abusing a stepdaughter has been arrested in Mexico and faces an extradition hearing for his return to Washington.

James R. French was arrested Oct. 10 in Mazatlan, Mexico, on a federal fugitive warrant and taken to Mexico City where he remains in custody, The Columbian newspaper reported.

It was not clear when French would appear before a judge in Mexico, Clark County Sheriff's Sgt. Dave Trimble said, adding that the extradition process may take anywhere from few weeks to a year or more.

When French does return, he'll face sentencing for six counts of child sexual abuse. The former owner of a bail bond company could be ordered to prison for 23 years.

After he was convicted on Nov. 13, 1995, Superior Court Judge Roger Bennett allowed French to remain on bail for a few days before sentencing. Instead of returning for sentencing, French fled.

Trimble said acquaintances of French's in Mexico grew suspicious of French for some reason and started checking into his background. They traced French back to Clark County and alerted both the sheriff's office and the Vancouver office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Sheriff's detectives and a Vancouver FBI agent contacted federal agents in Mexico, who worked with Mexican authorities to track French down.

French, 55, was married and operating a currency exchange in Mazatlan with his wife, Trimble said.
