My family and I are interested in trying to get mandatory minimum sentences for child molestors in Idaho. We recently had a family member who is 11 years old that was molested by her step-father. He was just sentenced last month and only received a six month sentence at Cottonwood which is basicly like boot camp. My family and I were shocked to learn that this is very common in our state. Also our child protection laws need some definate reform so that they can actually do what they should be doing, protecting our children. So if anyone has any suggestions on how that can be done. Please email me. Thank you.

What child protection law can you imagine that would have prevented your 11 year-old family member from being molested by her step-father? Can you describe what that preventive law would say?
How does the 11 year-old feel about the sentence? Do you think she would feel differently if it were her father v. step-father?

There is probably a grass roots organization in Idaho for child abuse advocates. You might check with SNAP (Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests). While they are priest related they are in every state and are connected with other groups.
They might know of someone in Idaho doing this.
Other then that "write your state legislator" is about all you can do. Hope they listen.

I agree with Simon on the protection laws. What could have prevented this? Mandatory psychological evaluation before marriage in cases where one of the parties has a child? Maybe an outright prohibition on such marriages? But then that doesn't protect children who will be victimized by a bio parent. What do we do about them? The sentence does seem light, but we don't know the facts and circumstances of the offense. But a judge, who did know the facts, handed down the sentence. For the time being, I would have to respect his/her judgement.

I am just on to say how sorry I am about the abuse in your family. When we found out about it in our family I know the trauma we all went through, and still are. My heart goes out to you and yours.

I ask Michelle to reconsider.Minimum tem measures are always a disaster.Does she know what the definition of "child molester" actually is? does she know that it includes teenagers who do silly things consensually with their underage girl or boyfriends?for this they are posted on the web,the addreses where they live with their child brothers and sisters so published their young lives so ruined and endangered, when often the original offence was often only a touching game at a party t When states have a "Romeo and Juliet" law and they only are placed on short term probation, and excused a criminal record record, they are still posted on the web.How can this make sense? Now does Michelle ant to see these young peole sent to prison, here hey will be cut, raped and posibly killed,a Judge having no power to prevent this PS Can lenient sentences be appealed in America,as they can in Britain? Michelle shouldconsider this as an alternative

If our laws got any stricter then we might as well throw away the constitution. Sure, its a bad thing to be a victim...but more laws isn't the answer...better parenting programs and public awarenes is. This kind of thing can be prevented without more laws and a stupid registry that nobody looks at till its too late. 6 months? let me guess, no penitration? maybe you all would feel better if we just took the guy out and shot him to death! And the ones who allowed him to get this close to the child in the first place...shoot them too! Sorry, just making a point. We dont need more laws, parents just need to start learning what to watch for or start doing thier job as a parent...in ALL cases, a concerned parent can be the best prevention ever.

I do wonder about the actual offense. Did he "touch" her in the wrong way? Caress her buttocks? Put his hand inside her shirt? You can bet with his sentence that there was no penetration. In fact, I bet there was no nudity, and probably no "skin" contact at all. I have to wonder also if there is more to the sentence than what we were told. Like maybe he got a jail sentence followed by a term of probation, maybe another ten years. For the offenses I described, a short jail term followed by sex offender probation is quite common. Perhaps Michelle can provide us with the guy's name? That would make it possible to verify his actual sentence.
