Former Calif. Police Officer Is Sentenced By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: October 11, 2003 Filed at 5:44 p.m. ET
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) -- A former police officer was sentenced to 34 years in prison for sexually assaulting women while he was on duty alone during the night.
Ronald Allen VanRossum, 38, admitted arresting women for outstanding warrants, then driving them to remote areas or a police substation, where he would sexually assault and then release them, prosecutors said.
Judge James Edwards said VanRossum, who had no prior criminal history, abused his power as a police officer.
"The victims were vulnerable, and he was in a position of leadership and authority," the judge said.
VanRossum made no statement before he was sentenced Friday. His attorney, William Hadden, also declined to comment.
In a plea bargain, VanRossum pleaded no contest to 11 felony counts including rape and sexual battery in the attacks on more than a dozen women.
He could be eligible for parole in 17 years.

This type of dirtbag is just as bad as molesting teachers or catholic priests. They use their power and authority over a victim to intimidate and psychologically control them.
The term "position of power" applies to this guy very well. I'm glad hes being locked up.

Well here is a clear case where castration (complete) would be appropiate. He was in a position of authority, did it more than once, must have known what he was doing was wrong. Why not offer him the opportunity to never offend again and save the public coffers the cost of maintaining him for the next 17 years. Elective castration in leu of prison time has been on offer in Califonia by a certain Judge with success in the past.

Are you crazy? Much as I would agree that this guy should NOT get out of jail in 17 years, suggesting castration is insane.

Yes its always wrong Anti. But in a way its almost "worse" when someone uses a position of power to influence a child like this.
For example, when I was 10 I NEVER would've gotten in that car if it wasn't my teacher driving.
There are a few other people who I wouldve gotten in a car with. Our minister, a police man...... see the pattern.
We're taught to trust and respect adults but more importantly CERTAIN adults. Thats why using your position to do something like this is even more heinous.

Yeah, and those "certain adults" that we all are taught to trust and respect can be you parents....the only thing in my mind worse than an authority figure raping a child is when your own parent violates your trust....then your entire world comes crashing in...where do you go from there? It's no wonder a lot of incestuous relationships end with destructive behavior or worse...suicide.
I have no problems with people criticizing cops, judges, teachers, priests etc... (I do the same) but let's not go to the extreme and minimize the damage parents do to their own families....trust, respect and love start in the home.

Parents abusing that trust are beyond anything I can imagine. To be a parent, a caretaker, a childs mentor and to abuse that trust is just so heinous.
