Some of the guys at work were discussing taran noah smith (Mark on Home Improvement). I found this site
http://extratv.warnerbros.com/dailynews/pop/08_01/08_28c.html
Why is it that this was played out as a money thing where if the genders were reversed the man would be serving serious time and on a registry the rest of his life? I mean a 33 year old woman with a 16 year old boy running away so they can continue their relationship? If it was a man and a girl the man would be charged with kidnapping. The link is old but still active.

If this is being reported in the media, social services etc must know about it. Maybe it's because he is so close to the age of consent ? Or don't the laws exist for famous people ?

I think it's an example of unfair gender discrimination.
The way I imagine people think about it is that in the case of a male adult and a female young person, the inexperienced person in the situation is liable to get pregnant. For some inexplicable reason, people have a stronger visceral reaction to the threat of their little girls getting pregnant than they do to the threat of their boys knocking some 40 year old up and becoming a father at a young age.
Given that little boys can just as easily and unwittingly become parents, or contract a venereal disease, BOTH types of cases should be prohibited and prosecuted vigorously.

Yeah in today's society there is sometimes a different standard for women than men. Some would believe that women could not be pedophiles or like young stuff. Reality paints a different picture.
You will find judges handing down stiffer sentences to men for sex offense crimes than women. Not always but quite often. Just part of our two-faced society.

I don't get it - why have charges NOT been brought up against this woman for taking a minor over state lines - etc?
This is UNREAL.

"...BOTH types of cases should be prohibited and prosecuted vigorously."
Alternatively, both types of cases could be de-criminalized.

I have no thoughts about this except that I like the post-industrial, Western society in which I live. Delaying the age of childbearing (for both boys and girls) is an integral part of society as we know it.
Until lots of people decide that, hey, it might actually have been better if they had become parents as soon as they started producing gametes, it is unlikely that adult-child sex will be decriminalized.
I'm happy about that, but I can understand why some others might not be.
