Forms to Congress

My lawyer and I, who are fighting some of the useless laws we spend millions on in a waste of tax dollars, have concluded that the only way people can make a different to politicians is if there are alot of them. We are talking about posting a form, or kind of survey on the internet to be filled out by the public. The results from the form will go into a database where it will be calculated and sent to congress. We hope that if there are enough of our people fighting this, then they might take action. If THEY dont, then i'm sure some big news company will! If such a survey was given, would many of you be willing to fill out this short form online? Personal info would be very limited, we are more concerned with the results. Does this idea even sound logical to attempt at this time? Let me know what you guys think. I'm sure if they just received some of the polls on here, this might get thier attention. But this will be a database only holding relevent information and opinions, its not going to be intended to be a weapon to slander with, just a tool to bring these serious issues to the attention of someone who can make a difference. The ACLU will also get a list of results as well, the result totals would be posted on the site where many took the survey. So those of you who want to change our laws, who think they are nothing but a false sense of security or have your own reasons...what do you think of this idea? Steve, your feedback would be appreciated as well, its always been my belief our government should satisfy the needs of we the people...though beaten down alot, it should still apply. Never underestimate public opinion, if harvested and presented correctly...it can win wars.

John

John,
While a noble cause, your choice of battlefields may be wrong or mis-directed. Depends on what laws you are speaking of. Most of our erroneous laws exist on the state level, and I doubt Congress has the authority to "order" the states to strike them.

You're right about Congress, to a certain extent. Congress can take power to regulate from the states where it is determined (by the Supreme Court) that the power is within Congress' constitutional mandate - often under the commerce clause. If it is not within Congress' mandate, the states may do as they see fit, until, of course, an individual challenges the law as an unconstitutional encroachment of the law by the state on individual rights, and the Supreme Court agrees.

What kind of survey are you conducting???

I don't think it will have effect unless the laws it is addressing are federal laws. Money with politicians goes a lot further than polls though.

"...often under the commerce clause"

Amazing how Congress can manage to link virtually anything to Interstate Commerce so it can be "regulated". Of course their other tool is revenue-sharing, used to enforce the original 55 MPH speed limit, SO registries, mandatory sentencing, and anything else that strikes their fancy in a given session.
