Comparing the crimes to each other is sill, I agree with you Doll Baby, but I thik what DP! and others are trying to point out is not comparing the crimes and have people delineate the "standard" of punishment, but that different things affect different people differently.
For example, combat vs a car accident and PTSD.
A man could be locked in a small and hot space for 72 hours, have missiles fired at him, be told these missiles are loaded with nerve gas and his gas mask not seal. He and his observer go through this and survive becasue that is what people to, they adapt to survive certain situation. Now some people would walk away from this with no issues, others could actually lose their marbles on the spot.
Now a woman who gets hit head on by a drunk driver and the resulting accident is gory, graphic and bloody could walk away from the accident with no problems or she could lose her marlbes on the spot, or anything in between.
Before you go off in a rant thinking I am being diversive and tangential, I am NOT comparing sexual abuse of minors or anyone with combat or car accidents. However, how events affect us varies from person to person.
A person who was the victim of a home invasion robbery can feel much more violated from that crime than they would feel from having sex before they were 18. So, in that case, the victim of the home invasion would feel like all people convicted of home invasion robberies should be banished as well.
The point being, human nature, history and common sense tell most people that laws designed to inflict post-punishment punishment on a certain group of people for retribution only do not stop at the first group of people, in this case it is NOT sex offenders, it is Indians, it only starts there. America has already set the precedent of modern enforced banishment of people. The Indians. We raped them in the name of the United States and banished them. If they refused, they were tortured and raped and killed. We interned the Japanese in WW2 and sold off their assets to fund the war effort. The things this nation, YOUR people Valerie, have done to the blacks between 1990-1965 almost puts slavery itself to shame! Your people, grandparents probably did not even consider a black man a human being! So now we have people commiting crimes that have always been committed among us. The reason for the culture shift is something that confuses me, for centurues only the Duncans were considered horrible people, but inter-familial incest and 14+ and adults was not treated as a crime. I think we are now facing hypocrisy in culture. Many of the people who scream to kill Couey go home and diddle their sons and daughters. Remember 95% of abuse goes unreported.
Where does it stop? Laws used for sex offenders are already overtaking other criminals AND non criminals alike. It is happening in your state... and it all started with one term, the term that has lead to sex offender banishment, will lead to drug dealer banishment and now is being used to banish in a way, law abiding citizens in florida..... "For the Greater Public Good"
One day your town may decide to evict you from your home "for the Greater Public good" and you can hopefully understand as historians and other empires long long before the US existed learned.... when you start with one group, it opens the door for everyone.
I might suggest sweet cakes that you get a DSM-IV and read it. Its not as interesting as gator hunting or cutting coupons, but it is very enlightening. You would learn something and somewhere in there, you might find yourself, your loved ones and yuppers, you'll find sex offenders in there too.
