It would be interesting to see the results of this poll based on the different types of people that respond. For example, I know my response would have been MUCH different before I actually started working with sex offenders. Reality and perception of reality can be two different worlds.

Also It would be interesting to see the results if this poll were given to the general public. My take is that people who use this website usually have at least some link to sex offenders whether as victim, perp, treatment or whatever.

I agree. Posters here "have a clue", regardless of the divergent viewpoints.
The general public, on the other hand, are more in line with DP1's statement to the effect that:
"Reality and perception of reality can be two different worlds."

Well, I think that most people envision disgusting, old, smelly guys who are desperate. When in reality, there are some very attractive men AND women who could be a sexual offender. There really is no "perfect" profile for sex offenders. It takes all types to be that messed up.

I am inclined to agree with dp1's statement that:
Reality and perception of reality can be two different worlds.
Unfortunatly most people seem to be content in living in a world that is only their perception of reality. The thought of out of sight out of mind, and if we don't talk about it it will go away are very prevolent in todays society.
I was in the past one of those people....the ...it can't happen to me....or ....it will never happen to my child.
I had a distorted mental picture of what a pedophile would look like.
I know now that there is no way to stereotype what a pedophile would look like.
After finding out I had been married to a pedophile/child molester, and listening to others stories i have come to the conclusion that a pedophile could be anyone...a relative, a friend, a neighbor, a day care provider, a doctor, lawyer, policeman/police woman, attractive, unattractive, obese skinny, etc. Anyone at all could be harboring these sick thoughts about your/my children, and anyone at anytime could act on those thoughts.
None of us can see the thoughts of others, nor can we be sure that we know their innermost secrets re: their actions past or present. You NEVER know 100% of who is or who is not a pedophile/child molester behind closed doors, no matter how well you think you know them!

People can assume that it could be anyone that fits the above poll results when in fact it is actually or can be anyone. So when you see that person that fits your typical mold of what a so called SO might look like, the real ones are the ones teaching your kids spelling in school or teaching your kids after school sports. Yeah the reality of hearing the truth hurts, but that is the truth. A pedophile or SO can be anyone.

The problem is that sex offenders come from all walks of life, professions, sex, and society. There is no one defining feature to say that is a sex offender. The bogeyman could just be around the corner, or right under your nose. So just look in the mirror if you want to see a sex offender, or what a sex offender looks like. Chances are that you are already a sex offender by today's definitions who hasn't been caught and convicted yet. Give the law time if you think this won't happen to you.

No offense, but how do I know you aren't in the middle of a bitter divorce and making this up? That does happen a lot more than it should.

Befor I met my boyfriend of 4 1/2 years , when I heard the words sex offender I automatically thought "child molester" "pervert" sicko who needs to be SHOT" WELL as ive sat down the cops and others who work in this area have told me, what people dont know is the list of sex offenders is a list of all different sexual crimes not all are child molesters. Including my boyfriend, when he was 21 he had sex with a girl who was turning 16 in one month which would have made it ok, hes now paying for his stupid mistakes for the rest of his life, he has to register because of it and I know another 22 year old who slept with a 15 yr old who has to register,,, some may say oh well they did the crime, but I think putting them on that list for that is a little far...they didnt rape or molest a little kid,,,and thats what they are made out to be. I didnt know he was a sex offender at first, he really doesnt like to talk about it,, but I found out and called his mother up and ive talked to the police and ive read all the court papers to make sure the story was straight. Since he had more then one count, they changed his registry to life time, this just happend about a year ago when they got tough on the laws and changed it. So now for the rest of our lives we have to deal with this, it haunts us both and its very upsetting, i lose sleep over it, i cry, i worry, we have a 16 month old son together , hes a wounderfull father and hes 32 years old now and has grown up...he was a very very immature 21 yr old young man and hung around younger people. I hate the thought of my child getting older and people at school and their parents finding out and my son getting picked on, or his friends parents not letting their kids come near my kid....were looking into trying to get something done about it,, befor it ruiens my sons life also. Im just trying to get the point out that not every sex offender is on the streets looking for little kids to molest.....some were young guys who just made some really stupid choices...and now pay for ever for it, in a horrible way.. I get discusted seeing his face on a list with others who have actually hurt children.

my father, a therapist i once had to treat agoraphobia, my gradeshool girlfriend's grandfather, my ex husband and an orderly in a hospital. And don't forget the date rapist . I was in the dreamlike state of awareness, had blocked the incident with my father for decades.
Later learning from a therapist that this only enhances the ability to attract more sexual deviants not having that "6th sense" of most to avoid closeness to them. Chidren are helpless and discussions with them should be initiated in kindergarden to educate them at their level. Anyone could be a pedofile as already discussed. Children have to be programmed somehow to recognize symptoms and communicate them safely. Then, in time, mabye we could put them out of the business of destroying lives.

How we perceive sex offenders is biased by what we see on TV, but in reality, sex offenders are most often just married men with children, driving a nice car.

after the head of the boy scouts of america was arrested for child porn, i think we should be looking very closley at the people crying wolf.usely the one holloring child molester the loudest and trying to get tv. airtime by passing laws might be the wolf in sheeps clothing.

Anyone remember that cartoon of "chester the molester" I think many people percieve that...when in reality it could be anyone from any walk of life....but overall my perception is someone who comes from dysfunction...there are many types of that...and it manifest itself in many ways.......I know mug shots arent representational of alot of things...but if you scan the registries.....it doesnt look like alot of bank presidents are there......

My image is not only what I see when I see a sex offender on television as we all do, but I see someone who has no feelings for what they do to another in a sexual way. They only care about their sexual feelings-the victim is nothing to them. Truly evil.

I think that a sex offender can be anyone, it can be your dad, mom, brother, cousin, boss, coworker, priest or anyone. Its crazy how there used to be the stereotype that it was so old guy lurking at the playground, well it sure isnt that way in real life. You never know who could be a sex offender until you see them at a registered sex offender or on the news.

suprised I mised it, k here goes:
ok, there is none, I have known, known of, seen... rso/pedos, all of the above and the looks, well to me as I have been doing this work for sometime now, I do feel they all have a "look" to me........ but as in re to a special look, well they can be middle aged, or a teen......... good looking , or not so, dirty looking, or not too bad........
when I do look at the so reg I do see alot of the same look, if you know what I mean?
but as I say there is NO real look, as one can be a doctor, or a factory worker, very bright, or not so bright.
anti
ps so as you see, there really is NO look, as why as parents we need to educate our children.
