Sure, and the guy you find living down the street who is listed as a sex offender is the only one around you. Now that you know about him you are safe. What is your worry.
Fact is that if your child will ever be molested that molester is already in your life. He isn't the guy down the street, he's daddy, brother, uncle or some other relative - either by blood or social group - who is already so attached that you will be jaded to his actions. Registries contain information starting at a very finite time. Do you really believe that sex offenders did not exist before Megan's Law? Pull your head out of the sand. If the chest thumping psychologists are correct and 1 in 4 girls as well as 1 in 7 boys are sexually assaulted before the age of 18 then you do the math. Just how many offenders are out there? And I will even allow for the offender who may have 1,000 victims (and how many are there?).
You want to hide behind feel good legislation that has only worked to create greater fear. I would suggest to you that you walk down to the man's home and tell him you know about him. Don't be mean to him, he is going to be your neighbor. If he has already done these things before is he the man you want pissed at you? But you can certainly let him know you know he is there.
Read my profile, I have informed my neighbors. But I am still here and will continue to be a property owner and tax payer. It's not an "in-your-face" thing. My only debt is to my victim. We live in one of the freest societies on the planet, and with that freedom there will always be risks. And it certainly makes one feel so righteous to pontificate with statements such as "hang em" and "put a bullet through their head" but frankly most of my cell mates were ex-state troopers, police officers, teachers and ministers. But by and large most of their victims were in their own families, not a neighbor. Try and not do your sociological tabulation by reading the local headlines. They probably were written to sell papers more so than actually provide information. Salacious headlines = profits.
