I like Marta's answer. Be a neighbor. You know, wave to them, talk about the weather, borrow a cup of sugar(or loan one). Doesn't mean you give them the keys to your front door, or tell them that if they need extra money then you'll be glad to let them babysit the kids. I mean, don't be stupid about it. But don't shut them out.
