State to post child-care complaints on Web site

ASSOCIATED PRESS

SEATTLE - Some child-care agencies are nervous about plans for an updated state Web site that officials say will list validated complaints against providers.

The new database, offered by a division of the Department of Social and Health Services, could be operating by mid-January.

The site will list and describe complaints that are deemed valid against child-care providers, and may also list those ruled inconclusive.

I thought this article was interesting in relation to sex offender registries as the registries are supposed to be for informational purposes. Likewise, this website is supposed to be for informational purposes too so that parents know which child care providers have had complaints against them. As a parent, I welcome this type of website and actually find it more useful than a sex offender registry. I want to know as much as I can about complaints against a child care provider who I am going to entrust with the kid. Notice that child care agencies are nervous about this website going online? They shouldn't be nervous since the website is for informational purposes only.

Interesting. Perhaps they're afraid their "minor" infractions will be lumped in with the major violations and they'll lose business or perhaps be ostracized at PTA meetings? Ruined and forced into homelessness?

To them I say "Here's a quarter. Call someone who CARES"

I think it's a great idea. They should have done this years ago! If I had a child 'day care' age, I'd definitely want to know that kind of stuff.

I agree. There are too many mom and pop type daycares out there, and some are unregulated. There definately needed to be a way to inform the public of infractions by day cares so that the public can make a more informed decision about the placement of their child.
