In another thread, I mentioned that I am waiting for the movie The Woodsmen to become available (I'm 1st or 2nd on a waiting list now). For those that aren't up to speed, I wanted to mention that many library systems maintain extensive DVD collections of movies and TV programs, available to rent.

One of my local library systems maintains a collection of more than 5,000 titles, with many of the titles having multiple copies across the system of a dozen or so branches. Using their website, I can request any title, and if available it'll be delivered to a branch of my choice and I receive an email notifying me when it's available, it'll held for a few days, then I can check it out for a week. If others have requested it, I'm shown how far back I am on the waiting list. For the movie March of the Penguins, I'm something like #275 on the waiting list and there are about 26 copies, so I figure it'll be 3 months before it's my turn. That's pretty extreme though. Many recent movies are available or have only a few on the waiting list for multiple available copies.

Not bad for free.

Collections in my metro area vary greatly, and the process to reserve or put on hold varies to, but it's worth exploring.

See an abbreviation or acronym, but don't know what it stands for? Consult the Glossary.
