CARLSBAD — The Eddy County Sheriff’s Department has proposed a registry system for convicted drug traffickers that resembles the system in place for convicted sex offenders.

Though the idea is in its beginning phase, Mayor Bob Forrest said he supports the convicted drug trafficker registry and he hopes to put it into effect in Carlsbad.

“I have been speaking with local legislators about this,” Forrest said. “Even if the state won’t try it, I would like to try it locally.”

Sheriff’s Department Captain Eddie Carrasco said the program would involve mandatory registration by convicted drug traffickers, in which they would register multiple times each year at the sheriff’s department. When they register, they would produce their address and work information.
