I'm just curious. Of your case load, what percentage of offenders are indigent? I think a big societal myth is that offenders are scrubby, non educated, derilects etc, but as we can see, even from the offenders here, most are quite articulate, educated and employable. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Dont forget part of the myth. Pedophiles and sex offenders are "intelligent, wealthy, tricky, sneaky, manipulative, cunning, blah blah blah".

Just a little humor but I always see assertions like that from the "experts" when talking about pedophiles in general.

Happy Holidays to you PVulcan! My caseload is awesome right now. I am fortunate in that I transfered to a beautiful rural area where indigent sex offenders are slim to none. By and large, sex offenders have far more resources than other types of criminals. The indigent sex offenders usually live in the inner city (where I used to work) so I have been spared the additional burden of dealing with that issue for now. I prefer the non-indigent sex offenders because they are more focused on "the issues" not the daily struggle of life. I've been in this position for a year now and have successfully weeded out all the dead beats. I have a super bunch of motivated guys who are really trying to learn what it takes to not re-offend. The only real "poor" guys I have are the old ones (I call them the geriatric club) who are retired drawing social security income. They still pay for treatment and probation on their fixed income. I agree that sex offenders are not scrubby derilects. Quite the contrary. The most amazing to me is not the pedophiles but the rapists. I haven't met an ugly one yet...go figure? If that doesn't convince someone that a sex crime isn't about sex nothing will. I take it you know what I mean?

I pretty much had thought that most offenders did have resources, which is why I find it interesting when people talk about a $25 treatment fee or group meeting fee and how unfair it is. So much work to do so little time! :) Thanks for the info....and yes I know EXACTLY what you mean.

I don't think $25 is too much either for treatment. I do think when combined with Court Costs, Restitution, legal fees, divorce lawyers, child support, living expenses, etc... it all can get quite over whelming at times particularly around the holidays.

when people talk about a $25 treatment fee or group meeting fee

A little more to it than that. $25 is the low end of the scale. There are also(depending on the state) monthly supervision fees, polygraphs ranging from quarterly to annually at $125 to $350 a clip, plethysmographs at the same frequency at $250 to $450 each, annual registration fees between $10 and $250, and the list goes on.
For a person like me, with an income that puts me in the 27% tax bracket and will allow me to retire in 3 more years at age 47, these numbers are not a lot. But to the guy who empties wastebaskets around the office on a straight $400 a week salary and has to pay $550 a month for an efficiency apartment, it is a lot.
There is a large spread between "having resources" and "being indigent".

Id love to see a $25 doctor appointment. I paid $60 a week for therapy and another $30 for group. I'd like to see a sliding scale or at least see it allowed as a tax deduction (medical expense) especially for non-offender patients like myself.

Hmmmmm.... I can't remember silverthorne, did you report your assault? The reason I ask is because victims can get help through Crime Victims Compensation, but I'm sure there is a statute of limitation, and you have to file a police report. I understand that you're a non offender, but I think you're an exception to the rule of pedophiles that acknowledge and seek help without offending.
I know in this area, Tacoma/Seattle treatment is very expensive and it is such a specialized field, the one therapist that comes to mind charges about 125.00-150.00, and assessment costs are outta this world.

Thats what I dont like. They have a captive audience up there to and the cost of living is alot higher in Seattle then it is in Phoenix. I dont even know how anyone could make it up there and pay for therapy.

Another thing. Most insurance companies will pay for drug rehab yet wont cover sex offender therapy. They pick and choose which crimes are "ok" to insure.

Not until it came out when I was discharged from the Navy. I sued for damages and did get a settlement so therapy money was never really an issue for me.
