A story on the British radio today. The government want a " Wife beaters ", National list, just like the paedophile one. I am all for that. Its a coward who picks on a woman. I never can understand why a woman stays with someone who uses her as a football. Do you have anything like that in your Countries?

Tessa,
A "Spousal Abuse National List" that includes men AND women would be more appropriate. Were you aware that the 1996 British Crime Survey interviewed 5,000 women and 4,000 men, and found the prevalence of abuse by their spouses to be 4.2% for each gender? That's 210 women and 168 men.
And a combined study by the National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control found that in the 12 month period immediately preceding the study, 1.3 million women had been victims of spousal assault, and 835,000 men

So the problem of spousal abuse is not limited to men battering women. The abuse is going the other way, too. The numbers may be smaller, but they are still significant enough to bear notice.

I take it you are either a wife or husband beater Poet, No other explanation for you to say such a thing. I care about people (be they men or women) .Do you think it is okay to beat someone up?. If so, you must lead a very sad life. I dont care whether it is male or female. They both deserve to be punished for hitting a defenceless person.

I don't condone violence, but I do believe the domestic violence myth has gotten out of hand. I do agree that it occurs, but as I pointed out previously women aren't the only ones victimized. Much like laws relating to sex with minors once were, the DV laws are written in a gender-specific manner that say a man can be arrested for cussing at his wife, but the wife can't be arrested for cussing back.
And what is a "defenseless person"?

This is a good rule. I mean if I lived somewhere and a couple moved in next door I'd like to know if hes a wife-beater. So when I hear screams next door I can call the police. That way I can be "on-guard" and watching for his criminal activity. Likewise I can be careful when I'm around him since he has a short temper.

I would class a defenceless person as one who cannot fight back because they are weaker than the bully who beats them up. Men (or women) who beat their partner have a yellow streak down their back. They would not pick on someone their own size. Maybe instead of a register they should be put in a room with someone bigger than them and have the living daylight beaten out of them.

In this area, there is alot more domestic violence in the past years involving teens beating up parents, most often, mom.

To respon to Poet. The problem when people beat each other is their children are brought up in that environment. Then those children go to schools and have a difficult time. The whole perception of LOVE gets so distorted. My personal belief is that everything about us gets back to our interaction and perception of love. It is safe to say that the majority of couples do not beat the hell out of each other I would think.

I want to see a study about the severity of domestic physical violence separated according to the sex of the aggressor.
