Is a Jaguar a reliable car

This isnt really a "group" topic here but you guys are kind of one of my only support groups (I dont know many people in real life being a recluse).

Anyway I'm looking at a 2000 Jaguar XJ8 Sedan and was wondering if anyone here had owned a Jag before. If so did they have any unusual problems with it or anything? I know they're really "nice" but are they reliable?

If Steve doesnt want to post this I'll understand. Then again maybe open a second forum here for "non sex topics" might be nice?

I have no personal experience with Jags, but I'd always understood in years past (15-20 years ago) that they were not very reliable. But didn't Ford buy Jaguar 10 or so years ago? Maybe Ford has helped improve the product quality.

I'd recommend perusing consumer reports and other websites for ratings.

Jag's do look quite nice. Does anyone buy a jag for reliability? For reliable transportation buy a honda civic :).

Its not really being bought for reliable transportation. Still I'd hate to buy a money-pit car (ive had a few of those). Its a present for myself. A dream I've had for awhile I finally decided to fullfill.

My mother had a '69 E-type, lemon yellow hardtop, straight-6 with triple Weber carbs. Sweetest car I've ever had the pleasure to ride in, and I've rode in some nice ones. When it was running, it was great. It wasn't so much "unreliable" as it was "finicky". The slightest thing would knock it out of wack, and a trip to the mechanic was needed.
Enough nostalgia. Simon is correct that Jaguar's reliability has increased dramatically since Ford became involved. One of my clients bought a "pre-owned" 2002 sedan for his wife, and he has no complaints about it whatsoever. And he is the kind of guy who would get rid of it at the slightest hint of unreliability.
If it was me, I'd buy the car without a second thought. But I would find a reputable import mechanic to take a look at it first. Don't trust the dealer's mechanic. And if you do buy it and need some work done on it, take it back to that independent mechanic.

Actually if you're buying a BMW, the M5 is the way to go. Not many 4-door sedans that do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds or will top 150. This one does both. But it will set you back $70K

Or you can wait until spring 2004 and buy a REAL car, the newly resurrected Ford GT40. $147K, 0-60 in 3.2 and a top of 195.

OH jeez, this reminds me of a funny story of days gone by. I was getting off work, went to the parking lot to get in my car. The guy across from me had this absolutely gorgeous 'LOOKING' jag. The hood was popped and it wouldn't start. I said to him, man!!! nice car, too bad it didn't run, as I hopped in my little Datsun 210 and started it up and drove away lol

Just to let everyone know. I've narrowed my car search to three vehicles.

This link can be followed to a car that I didn't pick but its the same model so you can see what I'm looking at.

Its amazing you can get a nice Jaguar for around $10K now. Sure theyre 7-8 years old but these cars are well maintained. The one in the link has some body work that is needed so I'm passing on that one. I've set my mind on a black one with chrome rims (XJ-R model with the supercharger).

You bet. 370 horsepower, double-intercoolers, 0-60 in 5.4 seconds! And black is the only acceptible alternative to Hunter Green (or whatever Jaguar called it). Does it have the black "racing" grille?

Yes body coloured grille and mirrors. I'm going to have the chrome done in Matte Black as well (painted).

I'm a big fan of Arden Jaguars ( http://www.arden.de )

Theyre a custom maker of modified Jags. They offer a subtle body kit that really adds alot to the car. I'm going to spruce it up into a racer toy for myself.

If you like Jags check out the Arden site its really amazing what they do with these cars.
