My mother had a '69 E-type, lemon yellow hardtop, straight-6 with triple Weber carbs. Sweetest car I've ever had the pleasure to ride in, and I've rode in some nice ones. When it was running, it was great. It wasn't so much "unreliable" as it was "finicky". The slightest thing would knock it out of wack, and a trip to the mechanic was needed.
Enough nostalgia. Simon is correct that Jaguar's reliability has increased dramatically since Ford became involved. One of my clients bought a "pre-owned" 2002 sedan for his wife, and he has no complaints about it whatsoever. And he is the kind of guy who would get rid of it at the slightest hint of unreliability.
If it was me, I'd buy the car without a second thought. But I would find a reputable import mechanic to take a look at it first. Don't trust the dealer's mechanic. And if you do buy it and need some work done on it, take it back to that independent mechanic.
