One feature of the county Web site is its e-mail notification function, which will automatically send subscribers an e-mail alert each time a new offender moves into a neighborhood. The state Web site will add the same service in April. Users of the county Web site, however, can register as many addresses as they want for reference, unlike the state site
The article addressed some other limitations and problems with the state site. It's good to see that the county is addressing those issues.
With this function, Shimkus said, school administrators can put addresses for each school bus stop and will be automatically notified when sex offenders move within a certain range from those stops.
I'll be interested in seeing what level of proximity a user can enter.

Heck, I'd be interested in the accuracy of the mapping. I've seen some good ones. Like a school that is supposed to be next to a highway about 1/2 mile south of a bridge going over a lake. Thing is, Google Earth says that school is about 1/2-mile east of the highway instead of right on it. As if that wasn't bad enough, Mapquest shows the school is about 3/4-mile north and 1/4-mile east of its true location. Which by the way puts it out in the middle of the lake.

I hear you there orolan. I know someone who used Google Earth, and the coordinates that it gave for the point of interest was actually a 1/2 mile from the true coordinates. On a more personal note, I used mapquest to find where a mall was located. It couldn't find the mall with the address of the mall. I followed a link to mapquest by one of the businesses in the mall to find the mall. I memorized how to get there, and it seemed straightforward enough. On the way to the mall, I stopped at a state tourist information center. They gave me a different route to follow due to construction. When I left the mall, I went in the direction that should have took me to the freeway according to mapquest. I ended up driving 10 miles in the wrong direction, before finding out that I should have went the other direction. My passenger wasn't very good with maps, and I couldn't get her to tell me different streets names so the I could determine if we were headed in the right direction or not. Luckily it was a nice spring day for a drive anyway.
I know one county that uses yahoo maps for their volunteer drivers who get reimbursed for mileage. The actual miles and the yahoo miles usually differ. Moreover, the shortest route isn't always pinpointed by the mapping program. Nor do the mapping programs take into consideration construction, which may mean a detour. One driver proved his point by driving as instructed according to the Yahoo map supplied to him by the agency. The next time he drove to the same destination, he drove how he would have taken there, and it ended up being 20 miles shorter. Now that agency doesn't hassle him too much if his miles varies from what Yahoo maps says.

The VA sent me a MapQuest printout for an appointment.
Of course the directions were wrong, but they pay mileage based on Mapquest's calculations.
Since they only pay about 11 cents a mile, i didnt quibble over the 3 miles it took me to find the right place.
I have been using the Yahoo Maps beta. I like it, its needs tweeking, but dont we all?!
