I hear you there orolan. I know someone who used Google Earth, and the coordinates that it gave for the point of interest was actually a 1/2 mile from the true coordinates. On a more personal note, I used mapquest to find where a mall was located. It couldn't find the mall with the address of the mall. I followed a link to mapquest by one of the businesses in the mall to find the mall. I memorized how to get there, and it seemed straightforward enough. On the way to the mall, I stopped at a state tourist information center. They gave me a different route to follow due to construction. When I left the mall, I went in the direction that should have took me to the freeway according to mapquest. I ended up driving 10 miles in the wrong direction, before finding out that I should have went the other direction. My passenger wasn't very good with maps, and I couldn't get her to tell me different streets names so the I could determine if we were headed in the right direction or not. Luckily it was a nice spring day for a drive anyway.

I know one county that uses yahoo maps for their volunteer drivers who get reimbursed for mileage. The actual miles and the yahoo miles usually differ. Moreover, the shortest route isn't always pinpointed by the mapping program. Nor do the mapping programs take into consideration construction, which may mean a detour. One driver proved his point by driving as instructed according to the Yahoo map supplied to him by the agency. The next time he drove to the same destination, he drove how he would have taken there, and it ended up being 20 miles shorter. Now that agency doesn't hassle him too much if his miles varies from what Yahoo maps says.
