Let's see. On the same weekend I was arrested or internet solicitation of a 15 year old in February of 2004, their were 22 people arrested for everything from burglary, attempted murder, DUI manslaughter, and similar offenses. Here are three of them:
The burglary bond was 5,000.
The DUI manslaughter was 20,000 (the person killed was, interestingly enough, 15 years old)
The attempted murder was 150,000. (person ended up dying, so murder was eventually charged)
And my bond for trying to hook up with a 15 year old from the internet?
1 million.
I am just as passionate, if not more passionate, than the average non-offender about keeping this guy off the street. But the bottom line is that if we have a less-than-zero tolerance for child abuse ("less than" meaning "societally-abusive post-corrective measures"), then we risk the wrath of permanent in-societal banishment. Make sure the punishment fits the crime.
