"No, it's not against the law to pass out the fliers, but you can't go around harassing (people)."
Obviously you can, since these six vigilantes walked away without even a slap on the wrist. I don't blame the RSO for not pressing charges. If he had, he woudln't have lived long enough to testify at trial. Baltimore is one of the most dangerous cities in the USA, especially in these ghettos. The most popular gift for a boy's 9th birthday is his first Glock 9mm.
"Two police cars come, (the officers said,) 'Get down on the ground.' Even the helicopter came and spinned around," Brown said.
Like I said.............:-))
"We had 54 sexual offenders in this 21202 area. So, what's wrong with people passing it on to the rest of the people if everybody don’t have a computer. What's the hate crime about that?" Lane-Gibson said.
Passing out flyers isn't a hate crime as long as they are truthful. Nobody is saying it is a hate crime. But threatening, harrassing and assaulting people just because they are on that flyer is a hate crime.

"WBAL-TV 11 News reporter Barry Simms reported police officers detained six young men late Thursday night after two witnesses reported seeing some of them attack a registered sex offender."
You know in domestic abuse cases if the police see evidence of assault they DONT NEED the victim to testify. They can make the arrest themselves and they are the witness.
So why not here too? If this SO had wounds, and witnesses reported it as an assault, it should be prosecuted not swept under the carpet.

"They said there was no assault and they were only trying to protect children in the neighborhood, Simms reported. The men said they just wanted the sex offender to understand they know he's in the neighborhood, which is near two schools."
I can just imagine how this "just wanted to let him know we know" went.......
"HEY PERVERT GET THE F' OVER HERE..... DID YOU KILL THAT KID????? F' PERVERT??????".
It isn't their job to "let him know" anything. Its harrassment and the penalty should be as severe as the penalty for not registering (ie: a felony conviction with no plea bargin and mandatory prison time).

Another article about this case. Police fear the "vigilante" attitude in the neighborhood might hamper their case.

One SO was questioned early on but eliminated. The article said:
"WBAL-TV 11 News reporter Kate Amara reported police picked up a sex offender in that neighborhood, but after questioning, determined that person was not a suspect. They removed that person from the neighborhood and relocated them for their safety, Amara said."
For his safety....... nice.
Harrassing someone due to their presence on a registry should carry the same penalty as failure to register. That being a felony conviction.

Looks like Maryland needs to follow Florida's lead with a deadly-force defense law. Two or three times of a sex offender killing a little punk Michael Jordan wish-he-could-be and the harrassment will come to a screeching halt. These people understand only one thing. Violence. So I say take it to them.
