This thread started out with the article regarding the offender who killed himself once fliers about him were posted. I had thought about this for some time and wanted to curtail my own emotions before responding.

I do hope that the remaining family members file a civil action against Mr. Harris. For Mr. Harris to state “Harris said sex offenders need to take responsibility for their actions.” makes me chuckle. I guess he does not believe that the punishment and social out casting is not enough. This is clearly grand standing and I do so hope that a civil action will help to sober the next group of vigilantes. Does society believe the numbers of offenders will decrease in time? I mean these lists are only from the last decade (well mostly) and look how many are on them already. This doesn’t even scratch the surface as to the numbers of old offenses and those whose victim’s continued to suffer in silence and self imposed shame.

I can not take credit for this statement for I am sure I am paraphrasing another poster. But it is of enough merit to warrant restating. Society wanted to be informed about sex offenders so they can take action to protect their children. So now they have that information, but it is believed that having that information also means that they should be able to prevent the offender from being there in the first place. America is a Federated Republic, but unfortunately we are turning it into a democracy. And democracies often change into an overly strong central government that becomes the quasi dictator.

One of my local prosecutors stated that he likes it when an offender goes on the lam. With all the networking of the electronic information systems it will only be a matter of time before the absconders are caught. And most states allow for the failure to register penalty to apply for each individual move as a separate violation. So with that they can lock him away for a much longer period than the original charge locked him away.

See an abbreviation or acronym, but don't know what it stands for? Consult the Glossary.
