Child molestation in the first degree.
(1) A person is guilty of child molestation in the first degree when the person has, or knowingly causes another person under the age of eighteen to have, sexual contact with another who is less than twelve years old and not married to the perpetrator and the perpetrator is at least thirty-six months older than the victim.

Rape of a child in the first degree.
(1) A person is guilty of rape of a child in the first degree when the person has sexual intercourse with another who is less than twelve years old and not married to the perpetrator and the perpetrator is at least twenty-four months older than the victim.
Quite a few states could learn a lesson or two from Washington. While I disagree with some things they do, their sex offense laws are very clear and concise. Rape has 3 degrees and is called what it is. Child rape is different and has 3 degrees of its own, and again is called what it is. Child molestation has 3 degrees and is called what it is. Sexual misconduct with a minor has 2 degrees, and once again is called just that. Regardless of any other factors, you get a clear picture of what the offense was. In Claxton's case it seems pretty clear he was not a 'child rapist'.
