Ah victorialondon; don’t you see that is exactly what they want. There are too many offenders lawfully registered now. And it is so hard to lock up guys obeying the law (even though you really want to do so). So create more laws, no one will fault for protecting society from monsters.
As one of our local district attorneys put it “If a sex offender kills himself then we know we are safe.” It is a competition among the states to see how they can best rid their borders. Pennsylvania lost a lot of offenders who had moved here because we did not have a published registry. Then in January it came on line and the guys looked for a better home. So each state must now look and prevent that state from becoming the new relocation state for offenders.
Society believes that offenders can not be rehabilitated and society is scared. Scared people do not necessarily think rationally. I remember when a teen was on my block in prison. He got gang-raped in the showers and eventually killed himself. When they interviewed people on the street the response was “Well, he should have thought about that before he committed his crime.” His crime was drunk driving and fleeing to avoid arrest. Yep, that definitely deserved the old “train in the rain.”
I will continue to live legal. There are consequences to choices. I may not be allowed to choose the consequences, but I am allowed the choice of choosing. I am active in campaigning for tougher sentences for sex offenders. I do believe that many offenses should be dealt with via life sentences. I am also of a mind to support the death sentence for certain offenses as well.
My gripe is when they granfathered the laws into play. The laws were not on the books when the crime was committed but they were enforced on the offender after-the-fact. Pennsylvania got around it by putting Megan’s Law under Administrative Code so that it doesn’t appear to be a punishment. What I find really funny is that the penalty for failing to register is often more severe than the original crime.
