If there going to commit these guys as "mentally ill" then they should also have the right to use MENTAL ILLNESS as a defense in court and it SHOULD be a valid defense.

Think about it. They're basically saying these people can't control themselves and can't help what they did. Now where were these arguments at trial?

The law should say they can apply for civil commitment ONLY AT INITIAL TRIAL and in order to get it they MUST use the "mentally ill" argument. That means hospitalizing them from DAY ONE not prison then hospital.
