So, the Illinois Attorney General is having informational posters plastered all over the place to make more people aware of the state sex offender registry. I haven't heard of any other states doing this. I'll be interested to see how much awareness and usage increase as a result.

It's also interesting in differences between this news (and headlines) as reported by various newspapers.

"The average recidivism rate for a sex offender is slightly less than 50 percent, Madigan said. A person who commits sex crimes against women has an average of seven victims, while a pedophile has an average of 112 victims, she said."

Its the old "leave out some important information" combined with "totally false unverifiable information" trick again.

Lets disect it. Sure 50% of sex offenders reoffend. But what kind of offense? Remember that AZ study I posted? Sure it was around 45% for a new crime but only about 7% for a new SEX CRIME. Isn't sex crime the topic of the whole registry? So they leave out that little part about "7% new sex crimes". How convienent. Nor do they mention that OTHER criminals (like burglars and drug dealers) reoffend at over 60%!!!!!

Then theres the old "pedophile has 112 victims" deal. Well I can count on one hand the number of cases where I've seen a serial molester actually say he's had 200 victims. In therapy I NEVER met someone like this. Also shouldn't they say CHILD MOLESTERS and not PEDOPHILES?

I wish I were really rich I'd sue them for defamation.

You have to excuse Ms. Madigan. She's a delusional politician with an eye on the Governor's house. She'll say anything that sounds good.

So maybe the site isn't getting enough hits to justify it's cost? It's not as if people don't know it exists. And you know online registries are very easy to use (as you proved me in your PM).
So what's next? Pop-up ads and banners on the registries to keep it going or what?
