"Given the technology used on the Wisconsin site, they're an example of the type of sites I was talking about recently when I said the registry's web server might not actually record the following combo: IP address of visitor, timestamp and which records were viewed. If they only have the first 2 pieces they'd only be able to prove a person visited the registry, not whose records they viewed and that wouldn't be enough to get a warrant or use as evidence. They might record all 3 pieces (if I ran a state registry I would), but they'd have to do via some custom logging other than that provided by the web server. Sorry if this is too technical, but this is the type of work I do for a living. ;-)"
Its a little technical but I think I understand. What I'm saying is if they're so serious about having a registry for "public safety" they have an obligation to A) do it right B) ensure its integrity C) make sure its not abused.
I mean look at it this way. Lets say 10 people on the registry were murdered in a month and someone found out it was because of hte registry. Doesn't it stand to reason that they might consider changing the law regarding the registry? Even though its "just sex offenders" I think you'd still see some kind of tracking of internet users come in. So why not do it now?
Prevention.
