No sooner did I post a message in reply to questions about halfway houses, then I came across this article about two convicted sex offenders with minor victims who escaped their halfway house.

Sex Offenders abscond from probation or parole every day. That's why they employ probation officers. It's routine business. Just issue a BOLO and get a warrant.
A halfway house is nothing more than a slum lord collecting rent from homeless people. If these guys had relatives to live with upon release they would have absconded from their homes. If the halfway house wasn't there they would have absconded the day they were released from parole. I suppose it's not as news worthy when that happens. The risk to the community is equal. Where they abscond from is irrelavent. This article is nothing more than a slam against clustering.

These guys are 19, 20, 21 and they're "predators" and dangerous? I wish they had posted what exactly they did so I could see how "kids" become predators (figuring they went to jail in their teens).

In Florida a Predator is defined by a first degree sex crime or 2 or more second degrees. Age of perp has no bearing on the severity of the charge.

How young can they be and still be "predators" technically? Any idea what these clowns did?

There's no age. If someone is convicted as an adult with a first degree or on a second degree with one prior second degree then they meet the criteria as predator. In Florida the Court must designate the person so it isn't automatic. I suppose there must be situations where a judge wouldn't designate someone a sex pred but I haven't seen that happen, yet but I won't hold my breath either.

If I recall correctly, a single offense that would qualify for "predator" designation would require either that the offender was over 18 and the victim under 13; or the offender was any age and used violence, force or coercion in the commission of a sex act without the other person's consent.
The oddball is that if a person kidnaps an 80 year-old millionaire and holds him for ransom, they get classified as a sexual predator.

Any capital sex offense committed by a person charged as an adult would qualify someone as a pred.

I agree. It's when you get into the "lesser" offenses, like molestation or lewd and lascivious, that it gets slippery. Most of those are 2nd or 3rd degree unless the criteria I mentioned are met.
