This article is dead on. I worked on the FBI Innocent Images Task Force. It consisted of 2 FBI agents, myself & 2 other officers from local agencies. All the online work was done by the 3 locals while the FBI agents did administrative work. We were sent for psychological exams every 6 months.After my 3rd exam, the psychologist was concerned.
My wife said that she had noticed a substantial change in my attitude. My normal laid back and easy going nature had been replaced by edginess, short temperedness and being very moody.
The straw that broke the camels back was a case I made of a guy posting child porn. After seizing his computer and arresting him, I had to veiw and classify every single image. I had to list how many were lewd exhibition, child on child sex, adult on child sex etc.
At the conclusion of that case I went to my boss & told him that I needed to rotate off he task force as these images were now going home with me in my head.
Being a father of 4 was certainly a contributing factor. In fact, the female FBI agent on the task force was puzzled as why it bothered me. A short time later, when she had her first child she asked to be rotated off.
One image I will never forget, no matter how hard I try, was from a case that another TF member made. I was assisting him in classifying the images when we came across a series of pictures of a baby about 8 to 10 months old. It started out with the baby smiling and then showed step by step the sexual abuse the baby was subjected to. That was so vile and disgusting I felt like, well let's just say that I was less than concerned about humane treatment of the guy we arrested on that case.
I later found out that the average stay on Innocent Images is 18 months. I am thankful for the opportunity I had to do that job. I was very happy when I got one of those guys off the street, BUT it definately took its toll on me.
When I was on the task force people would ask me how I could do that job. My answer was always the same. I got to say " You are under arrest". I knew that there would be one less pedophile on the streets for every case I made.
BTW, that's how I got the nickname of Pervert Poloice.
