This officer just doesn't get it. He is in the wrong frame of mind. He has been accused of a serious crime. It doesn't matter how exemplary his career has been. His life will always be judged by the crime he has been accused of. With a bail of $1 million dollars, they might think he is a flight risk. However, he shouldn't ask for his bail to be lowered just because he is a cop.
I do agree with his lawyer though that he could mount a better defense if he was out of jail. Defending yourself while in jail is just not the same as when you are not. However, plenty of citizens have had to mount a defense from inside jail. All jails provide a place where you can speak with your lawyer. Mr. Powell will have to learn how to communicate with his lawyer from inside the jail.

While I agree the bail is excessive for someone who isn't a flight risk (which he appears to not be) he almost deserves it for pure stupidity. Hes a cop for petes sake!
"When the undercover detective communicated that she was only 13, Powell allegedly wrote back, "I like young hotties," according to the criminal complaint. "
Well if this actually happend the way they show it here I think he's pretty guilty. Then again it would be nice to see a couple things published in cases like this:
1) The EXACT TEXT where the "kid" reveals his age and the accused shows understanding.
2) The way contact was initially started. Did the "kid" contact the man or did the man contact the "kid" first?
3) What type of chatroom was this in? Was this a "kiddielove2004" chatroom which obviously by the title would show what its about or was this an adult chatroom like "Philidelphia M4F" or something like that?
My big concern in cases like this is entrapment. To be a "clean case" as far as I'm concerned the accused should be the one contacting the "kid" and the "kid" must clearly state their age (something like I AM 14). Then the accused must CLEARLY initiate sexual conversation not the kid.
Theres just so much room open for abuse in these types of cases.

I think the guy should be held without bail. He betrayed the public trust.
I do have some problems with his charges, though. How do you have "Involuntary deviate sexual intercourse" online? I can't even find it in the New Jersey statutes t ofind out what it means.

I don't feel sorry for him. The Judge needs to keep him in jail to send a message that dirty cops will be dealt with. He deserves a fair trial like anyone else and a fair sentence but certainly no special treatment. I would argue that he is a flight risk based on his career and fear of prosecution.

Ex-cop gets jail in Web sting
http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/113-07192005-516193.html
By PAUL RUPPEL
The Intelligencer
John P. Powell says he is not the "pedophile, monster, predator" people make him out to be.
He was a Philadelphia police officer for eight years before joining Warminster's force and received various commendations and awards - one for rescuing a child from a burning home.
Powell told the court it was "a stupid mistake" having a two-hour online sex chat with what turned out to be an undercover police detective posing as a 13-year-old girl.
[snip]
O'Neill called it an "adeptly drafted" statement that showed Powell didn't truly believe he did anything wrong. The judge said Internet stings were developed to combat the anonymity of sex assaults and provide protection for those who most need it, children.
"You fail to understand that the crime you committed is becoming an epidemic," O'Neill said.
Without divulging many details, the judge mentioned that Powell told a pre-sentence investigator about being molested during youth baseball.

Oddly enough, the article never says what his sentence ACTUALLY was. Only that the parole board won't let him out at 5 years if he doesn't adjust his attitude.
Find out what prison he's in and pass the word around that he's both a pervert AND a cop and he won't live long enough for it to matter.
