Of those 167 allegations, involving 163 athletes, only 22 saw their cases go to trial, and only six cases resulted in convictions. In another 45 cases, a plea agreement was reached. Combined with the six athletes convicted at trial and one who pleaded guilty as charged, that gives the athletes a 31% total conviction rate in the resolved cases. That means more than two-thirds were never charged, saw the charges dropped or were acquitted.

This is a pretty interesting article about the disparity in how sports figures fare in trial compared to the average citizen.

I'd be willing to bet that just about all of the disparity could be explained by the quality of representation the athletes get compared to that of the average joe.

Not to mention the very real possibility that the accusations are fabricated. If you were going to make a false assault claim, would you make it against the guy bussing tables down in the bar, or the millionaire athlete upstairs?

I read this article. It seems to all revolve around money. Look at the OJ case. I think everything points to him actually doing it. But grab some high priced lawyers, confuse the issue with the race card (which had nothing to do with it) and turn it into a media circus. What you end up with is not-guilty in most cases.
