But then again we all know this was just about politics. It is the same for DWI laws. DWI laws were part of a political campaigne and it did not much to prevent death. If you look at the cost of it to tax payers and the back log in the courts its another joke. Its sad to think that people who want to run for public office or get re elected would even play the fear card rather then think the process through with real solutions

Good article. Its nice to see someone look objectively at what was really just a case of public hysteria.

CBS news did a report last week on sex offenders and actually had a person quote the 5% recidivism rate from this 1994 study. I was surprised, to say the least.
Maybe this article's viewpoint of having a more realistic relook at SO's and Megan's law is starting to have enough credibility in its reasoning to where major broadcasting is willing to lay it on the brainwashed public.

LJ,
In what context was it quoted? What was the context of the entire story? We're they pointing out that maybe registering everyone isn't really necessary?

If I recall correctly, the main gist of the news report was that there are sex offenders in almost all neighborhoods and they have to live somewhere. Nothing was specifically mentioned about registries and their impact on the problem.
In the middle of the report was a person quoting the low recidivism rate of SO's, according to the recent study. I didn't get the impression that it was of the "usual" fear and hysteria-type reporting that hs been so prevalent in the last few years.
