Here's how one locality funds their public notification of high-risk sex offenders.
"In September 2000, the district attorney’s office became the first law enforcement agency in California to publish photos and other information on high-risk sex offenders on the Internet.
Funding for the map project was generated from money seized from convicted drug dealers."

It's about time - California has protected its sex offenders for too long. Merced County prosecutors are showing alot of guts to do this I am sure they had a lot of opposition. Even from law enforcement.

"A violation will subject that individual to prosecution for their crimes committed and an additional five years for misusing the information, Spencer said. "
This is good to. Not only will they prosecute vigilantes for their crimes of revenge but they'll tack on an extra five years for using the registry info this way.
Great law!!!!!!

Sounds like a great law but what happens to the state if someone kills an RSO ? Is the state liable for giving that information out and not doing anything about protecting the freedoms of an RSO ? why is it that all this information is just for RSO when there are other dangerous criminals lurking in neighborhoods ? I always play the devils advocate because there are two sides to everything and it seems when its always to late someone realises that it wasnt such a good idea.

Actually, this has been going on for awhile in several California counties.
Pinpoint maps are available online for several counties. Go to
http://www.publicrecordfinder.com/states/california.html--then scroll down to California Sex Offender maps.
The San Jose City Council also just recently approved to have a map of high risk offenders online soon.

This information is also available right here at SexCriminals.com through the Sex Offender Registry Directory. I checked the link you posted and we actually have more detailed, accurate and comprehensive information here for the state of California and those cities and counties in California which have information online.
Here's the direct link to the California page on our site.

Didn't mean to overlook your lists, Steve--I had the one I posted bookmarked from awhile back ago and when I came across it, I automatically inferred that it would show that California has already been doing maps for a period of time---never thinking that you might have a more updated list of the same. My apologies for not first clicking in to your efforts on a more updated and current CA list.

No apology necessary lj. By all means point users to external resources. I might be a little biased, but I think the SexCriminals.com sex offender registries directory is the best available so I thought it was worth mentioning.
