Sex offender?????
This is a little much. Some old guy wanted a "gay" experience in a public bathroom and got caught.
When I see stuff like this I wonder why all prostitutes and Johns arent registering then. If he was the only one to be registered of the four yet it says they look at his background it really makes me ask "why".

"On June 13, a plainclothes detective wearing surveillance equipment entered a park bathroom about 25 feet from the playground. Dick entered the bathroom minutes later and, while children were heard playing in the background, he had a brief conversation with the undercover detective."
The inference from this paragragh seems to be that the detectives were concerned about the potential of this guy exposing himself to children at some point.
Or, it's added media hype by mentioning "while children were heard playing in the background."

We have a park near where I stay. The gays were meeting in the public toilets and the police arrested the ones who were offending. Children (like the ones in the park where the retired policeman was) use the toilets. Tourists pass through our lovely town and use the same park and toilets. I am not gay bashing . Do what you want in your own home, not in public places. Is there no decency left in this world any more. Silver ,you seem to think what they were doing was right. Children grow up fast enough. Let them have a decent childhood.

Tessa,
Its obviously wrong. My point is does it make him a "sex offender"?
If so then I'd counter everyone who commits adultery is a sex offender and should be registered too.
Its common sense. The registry was to protect people. This guy is hardly a threat to children.

Its called selective enforcement , While it should be conducting illegal activity in a public place I still am dumb founded as why he has to register? They were adults and yes prostitues should be required to register as well as johns. Selective enforcement does nothing to solve the problem

I'm sure it's part media hype. If it weren't for the reference to his former position of authority it wouldn't sell and I probably wouldn't even have noticed the headline.
What he did was illegal and doing it in the vicinity of children isn't appropriate, but personally I'd like such folks not to appear on the public registry unless they have a history of offenses. The registry is less effective when it's full of those that aren't high risk.
