Prison crowding imperils safety, official says
State urged to reconsider shipping inmates out of state

Madison - A legislative leader said Wednesday that prison overcrowding is jeopardizing the safety of inmates and guards, and the state must consider shipping prisoners to other states again and study whether a new prison is needed.
Wisconsin inmates are "crammed into every corner of every institution," which has contributed to recent attacks on guards at the Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution in Plymouth, said Sen. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau), co-chairman of the Joint Finance Committee.
"Refusing to consider building a new prison or sending inmates back out of state is madness," Fitzgerald said.
Wisconsin had a brand new prison that they couldn't open because they couldn't afford to staff it. Now the new prison is finally open, and they are considering shipping inmates to other states again since they don't have space in the prison system. People are going to need to consider this when they pass laws for longer sentences for sex offenders.
