AYERSVILLE, Ohio - An Ayersville High School Spanish teacher who is on unpaid leave for showing her high school class a Spanish language movie with sexual bondage themes has requested a hearing before a State Employment Relations Board referee.
The hearing, which Megan Espen requested Tuesday, is proposed by district leaders to be held in the school offices on Jan. 17. It was not clear yesterday whether Mrs. Espen's attorneys had agreed to that date and location. The hearing will be behind closed doors unless Mrs. Espen would request that it be open to the public.
Both Mrs. Espen - who the district superintendent has recommended terminating - and school administrators can subpoena witnesses to the hearing, which is expected to cost the school district thousands of dollars. But the referee only makes a recommendation to the school board, which does not have to abide by it.
