Now, Krone is active in groups such as The Witness for Innocence Project that help educate others about the death penalty and the imperfections of the criminal justice system.

“I still believe in our system,” Krone said. “It’s not the system — it’s some of the people who are running it, the people making the rules. And we can change it.”

Krone said the problem with the death penalty is a lack of consistency.

Some people who commit murder are not executed while others are, he said.

He said there is no concrete definition of a fair trial, and much depends on what the person charged can afford, who the judge is and the ability of the prosecutor.
