Given the fact that I am 19 years older than the brother in question, and he was with me because our mother couldn't control his behavior, yes, I was behaving like a "father figure".
Very important to note here that the charging state did not classify me as a sex offender or order me to register, my home state did so as a condition of being supervised by them.
I started therapy before ever being sentenced, because my lawyer advised it. After talking with me for several sessions, talking with each of my daughters(without me being present), and talking with my brother, my therapist determined that while I had some "issues" to resolve, a sexual attraction to young girls was not one of them. So the bulk of my therapy revolved around my interaction with other children and what was proper to keep from parents and what was not, both legally and morally. I was never a part of the "group" therapy the other sex offenders went to(and still do).
I am prone to "help" anybody, especially a child. Some have said I'm too "big-hearted". Maybe so. I haven't fully resolved the issues within myself in that respect. When I see someone in need, I still want to help. But I have to turn my back and walk away, because I can't take the risk of my "help" being mis-interpreted. And it hurts, because it isn't the child's fault that I can't help them. In the one case since I've been on probation where somebody needed some help(one of my daughter's friends), I went to her parents and talked with them about the situation. And it worked itself out, with a little help from me to them.
As for your wife's comment, that is "somewhat" true. In the context of "teaching", where no specific actions between individuals is discussed, yes it would be legal. Not so sure about a one-on-one conversation with a student about his/her actions with another student. At a minimum, such a conversation should be reported to the Guidance Department, and they could decide if the parents needed to be informed.
